The YSRC was established in 2022, gaining nonprofit status in 2023, as a D3 festival-style rugby team in the Midwest Rugby Union. The ‘Starling’ name was inspired by the coordinated motions of murmurations in which the birds must be conscious of their flock. We also adopted their stunning black sheen with purple and green feathers.
Since it’s inception, the Starlings have focused on maintaining an inclusive space for people of any skill level who identify as cis, trans, or nonbinary - “womens+.” In addition to playing rugby we do this by participating in queer community events such as Ypsi Pride. We also aim to partner with local businesses and nonprofits to share resources and introduce rugby to the greater community.
The Starlings are part of the Midwest Rugby Union, and play in the Division 3 Festival League. Festival-style rugby promotes developing clubs by encouraging teams to blend together to share players and skills. We promote an a la carte style experience - allowing individuals to determine personal level of commitment. The Starlings have both active players and social members within our organization.
